Ireland – June 2024

IJKA UK members travelled to Southern Ireland in the last week of June to participate in the International Seminar held at the ‘Star of the Sea’ school in Passage West, County Cork, on 28th & 29th.
IJKA International Chief Instructor Utsumi Takato Sensei presented a fantastic seminar.
Day one, part one, focused on Kihon and in particular the generation of power by correct use of hips, body mechanics and timing. The morning culminated in the practise of Heian Shodan incorporating everything Sensei had taught.
The afternoon continued with routines for kumite practise.
Day two, part one, saw work on the details of the Heian Katas along with Bassai Dai.
The afternoon brought more kumite practice routines.
At the end of the seminar three students who had taken Dan gradings at various times previously, were awarded their IJKA Dan grade certificates by Sensei Brian Toomey and Sensei Utsumi Takato.
The seminar was concluded with a grading being held.
Sunday 30 June saw the IJKA European Championships held in Ringiskiddy, County Cork, at the Maritime College.
IJKA UK was represented by members of Aberdeen Shotokan Karate Club, SBKA York and Worcester Shotokan Karate Club.
IJKA UK extends congratulations to all members that were successful in winning medals.

A Christmas Message from IJKA UK

Oss All,
In the words of our late IJKA founder Kato Shihan, the officials of IJKA UK would like to wish all our members a very Happy Christmas and a Merry New Year.

2023 was a fantastic year for the association, with opportunities for members to attend 3 seminars this year starting with Worcester and ending in Aylesbury for our Christmas Course.

Between those two we held our first International Seminar with Utsumi Takato Sensei IJKA International Chief Instructor.
The venue near Blackpool was superb and easily accommodated all the karateka that trained.
We had a good attendance from all IJKA UK members and karateka from other IJKA countries and other associations joined us.
The two day seminar was not just about karate though as we had a wonderful social gathering on Saturday night with a superb meal.

The seminar and social event were both great successes and a reflection on the great organising behind the scenes for many months prior to the weekend.

IJKA UK set the bar high and delivered, proving that although we may be a young association in formation terms, we are not lacking in any organisational skills and also have an unrivaled history and lineage within IJKA International.

Our late Honorary President Ron Bellwood would have been very proud that his beloved Blackpool was chosen as the seminar location and host.

Takato Sensei really enjoyed his time with us all, as did the many visiting karateka from other countries and associations.

IJKA UK look forward to inviting Takato Sensei to the UK again.

The way forward for IJKA UK is UP.

All the very best for 2024 from IJKA UK.
Osu,
The Officials

IJKA UK Winter Seminar 2023

The IJKA UK Winter Seminar took place at Worcester on 11th February 2023.

Keith Crighton Sensei 7th Dan IJKA took the seminar and his 50 years with Kato Shihan were evident in the quality of instruction given throughout the day.

Mind games with Kihon and Kumite routines were excellent, as was the focus on the ‘Shodan’ katas, Bassai Dai and Junro Shodan.

Congratulations to James Spry and Chris Adams of the Worcester Dojo for successfully reaching the first step, Shodan, on the day.

Kato Shihan’s spirit was with us in the dojo.

IJKA UK look forward to more seminars this year.

Rest in Peace…

It is with great sadness to announce the passing of IJKA UK Honarary Chairman, Sensei Ron Bellwood 7th Dan, on 29th December 2022 following a brief illness at the age of 92.
He was a well respected instructor and continued teaching and training until a few weeks before his passing.
He began his Karate training in the early seventies after finishing his football career with his local club and practicing Yoga. He had been Kato Sensei’s student since the late seventies. He was one of the most senior instructors in IJKA UK which he helped found following the passing of Sensei Kato.
We extend our deepest condolences to Ron Sensei’s family, friends and to his Blackpool dojo students.
Ron Sensei, you will be missed but not forgotten.
Oss.
